The second battery is a MUST for Canon digicam owners, not because the battery life is short (it’s NOT), but because Canon provides you with an external charger (while other brands generally force you to charge the battery inside the camera). Charge one while you use one, so you’ll have a fresh battery every time you run out of power. Plus, when you go to weddings or other big events, you’ll want to keep the extra battery on you so that you won’t run out of power towards the end of the party, when the party really gets rocking. You might want to get an after-market (generic) brand though, since the Canon brand is severly overpriced. Generic ones cost less than half of the Canon ones, and they are just as reliable.

I ordered this battery so that I would have a 2nd battery for my camera. Since I’ve owned this battery, I no longer worry about running out of steam. With a 512K memory card and a 2nd battery, I’ve gone through 2,000 pictures and printing without hardache.

I’ve bought THREE different NB-3L aftermarket batteries for my Canon SD500 and none of them will actually function properly…they indicate fully charged but when put into the camera they immediately show as “discharged-replace battery pack”. I even bought an aftermarket charger thinking that might be the problem…same result. I’ve given up on the 3rd-party batteries, I’ll get this Canon brand unit and lick my wounds. (Yes, the Canon is overpriced but since they seem to have engineered the camera to only work with their own batteries I’m kind of stuck…has anyone else had this problem?)

I bought two after-market batteries for $12/ea. What a waste! After charging them completely the camera displayed a low battery warning. Don’t waste your money on cheapo aftermarket batteries that don’t work. The Canon batteries are worth the extra money.

When I first got my camera, I tried to save money by getting the generic ‘equivalent’ battery. Big mistake. After fully charging it, the camera would take a few pictures before showing low battery. I kept on shooting anyway, just to see what would happen. It didn’t turn off, but I noticed that the side of the camera became much hotter than when shooting with the Canon brand battery. I tossed the generics and bought the real one, and have had no trouble since.

Don’t try to be cheap; go directly to name brand.
